Description

The Rare First Separate American Edition

Edgar A[llan]. Poe. The Raven. Illustrated. With Biographical Sketch of the Author. New York: W. Jennings Demorest, [n.d., circa 1870].

First separate American edition, and possibly the true first separate edition. Slim sixteenmo (approximately 5.75 x 3.75 inches). [ii], [18], [1, blank], [1, ads], [2, blank] pages. With eighteen wood-engraved illustrations; decorative initials and decorative title page.

Original maroon cloth with gilt lettering and blind-stamped decorations and borders. Pale blue endpapers. All edges gilt. Binding rubbed and worn, particularly at and along extremities. Fraying and some loss to spine ends. Spine lightly faded. Slightly cocked. Front hinge cracked; rear hinge starting. Hole in front free endpaper. Binding still fairly tight, but a bit tender. Generally very good.

Publisher W. Jennings Demorest offered this slim volume containing Poe's most popular work as a premium to subscribers of two of his magazines, Demorest's Monthly (1866-1877) and Demorest's Young America (1866-1875). This edition unknown to Blanck, but BAL 16216 lists an unseen "first separate edition" as being published in Glasgow in 1869 as a special issue, printed on lilac-tinted paper, possibly as a special edition for the blind. Rare.
