    More Information:

Dr. Gustave Le Bon. Les Civilizations de L'Inde. Paris: Firmin Didot & Co., 1887.

First edition. Folio. vii, 743 pages. Complete with seven chromolithographs (including frontispiece), all with their original tissue-guards. Two maps and 350 engravings, some after photographs, throughout. Title printed in red and black.

Publisher's full red morocco, elaborate rosette borders tooled in black and gilt, front board with stylized title and pictorial temple pillar motif stamped in gilt and black, spine elaborately tooled and lettered in gilt, decorative endpapers printed in gilt and black, all edges gilt. Spine very slightly sunned. Very light rubbing and shelf wear, and corner slightly showing. Hinges tender but still holding tight. Overall a very good copy.

A lovely copy of Le Bon's "Civilizations of India", in far better condition that is usually the case. An informative work that touches upon the histories, cultures, and art and architecture of the subcontinent, this is also a handsome production, complete with seven examples of color printing, as well as hundreds of photogravures. However, perhaps the most stunning aspect of the book is its remarkable binding, in full red morocco, with elaborate tooling in gilt and black, including a detailed temple pillar motif on the front board in place of the inside border.
