Daniel Defoe. The Life And Strange Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, of York, Mariner. With An Account how he was at last as strangely deliver'd by Pyrates. Written by Himself Vol. I. [and:] The Farther Adventures of Robinson Crusoe being The Second and Last Part of his Life. And of the Strange Surprizing Account of his Travels Round three parts of the Globe. Written by Himself. Vol. II. [with:] George Chalmers. The Life of Daniel De Foe. London: John Stockdale, 1790.

First Stockdale edition. Two octavo volumes. Two unnumbered pages; [i]-xii; [1]-389, [i]-[vi]; [1]-456 pages. All plates present: frontispiece in each volume, portrait of DeFoe, and twelve engravings by Medland after drawings by Thomas Stothard.

Contemporary tooled calf with triple rules stamped in gilt on the boards, and titles and decoration in gilt in six compartments between five raised bands on the spine. Single gilt rule on the turn in. Top edge gilt. Marbled endpapers. Spines darkened with light wear at the ends. Boards scuffed at the extremities. Corners of Volume II bumped. Preface re-margined and possibly supplied from another copy in Volume I; title page re-margined at the top edge just above the titles in Volume II. Light scattered foxing throughout. Else a handsome set in very good condition.

This attractive set restored Crusoe's original text which had been much abused from the 1719 first appearance. Remarkable still is the inclusion of George Chalmers' Life of De Foe [sic] which was the first significant biography of Defoe.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
