Rare First Issue of Lawrence's First BookD. H. Lawrence. The White Peacock, A Novel. New York: Duffield & Company, 1911.
First edition, first issue. Lawrence's first book. Twelvemo. , 496 pages.
Original decorative light blue cloth stamped in white and dark blue and titled in white. Boards rubbed, with some stains and discoloration. Spine panel faded. Hinges starting. Page edges foxed, with light damp stains at the lower edge of several pages. A basically sound copy in very good condition, rarely seen in this original form at all.
The rare true first issue with 1910 date on copyright page, later (and quickly) changed to the correct date of 1911 as appears on the title page. Only a handful of copies in the first issue state are known to exist. This U.S. first appearance is significant in that it contained sexually explicit passages considered too suggestive for the time and were taken out and/or revised for the first British edition, which didn't appear until later. This original Duffield first issue had pages 227 and 230 revised for the British issue, including p. 230 originally as: "God! -- we were a passionate couple -- and she would have me in her bedroom while she drew Greek statues of me..."; and was changed to: "Lord! -- we were an infatuated couple -- and she would choose to view me in an aesthetic light...."
