A Rare Work Later Used by the Continental Army

Campbell Dalrymple. A Military Essay. Containing Reflections on the Raising, Arming, Cloathing, and Discipline of the British Infantry and Cavalry; With Proposals for the Improvement of the Same (In two parts). London: D. Wilson, 1761.

First edition. Octavo. xx, 389, [2, errata] pages. With seven of eight folding plates (lacking Plate 2) and two folding firing tables.

Contemporary calf with twin gilt rules, raised bands, titles and decoration stamped in six compartments on the spine. Skillfully rebacked. Modest shelf wear to the corners and edges of the boards. Contents clean with some toning to the preliminary and terminal pages. Plate 6 torn. Armorial bookplate on the front pastedown. Very good copy of this scarce work.

Extracts from the present work were published in Philadelphia in 1776 and used by the Continental Army.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
