Antonio De Solis. The History of the Conquest of Mexico by the Spaniards. Done into English from the Original Spanish of Don Antonio De Solis, Secretary and Historiographer to His Catholick Majesty by Thomas Townsend, Esq. London: Printed for T. Woodward at the Half-Moon, et al., 1724. First edition in English. One folio volume. [i-xvi], 163 (Book I-II), 252 (Book III-IV), 152pp (Book V). Six copper-engraved plates, including the portrait frontispiece of Hernan Cortès, and two maps. Contemporary full calf with red gilt-stamped red leather label to spine; spine in seven compartments between six raised bands. Volume has been rebacked with original spine laid down. Boards quite scuffed and worn, with some areas of discoloration. Significant wear to spine and joints; leather peeling at head of spine. Hinges broken with boards hanging by cords. Foxing to engraved frontispiece and some toning to title page; minor closed tear to margin of first folding plate. Otherwise, the pages are amazingly white, bright, and fresh. Bookplate of Thomas Tyndall, containing the Tyndall family coat of arms. Currently in a binding in only good to very good condition, but the superb contents make this volume a prime candidate for rebinding.

Antonio de Solis y Ribadeneyra (1610-1686), better known in his day as a dramatist, received in his later years the royal post of official historian and chronicler of the Indies. The History of the Conquest of Mexico by the Spaniards, his major historical work, was published in Spain in 1684, two years before his death. The folio edition of Townsend's translation of 1724 marked the first appearance in English of this work. The scope of this volume covers a three-year period, culminating in Cortès' taking of Mexico City.
