Andre Levinson: Limited First American Edition of The Story of Leon Bakst's Life with Bakst Watercolor Pasted In (New York: Brentano's, 1922), first American edition, 240 pages, bound in vellum with brown titles, folio (11" x 14.75"). Number 216 of 250 numbered copies of the first American edition. Leon Bakst was a revolutionary Russian painter who mentored the likes of Marc Chagall. He was elected to the Imperial Academy of Arts in 1914. The Story of Leon Bakst's Life is a gorgeous and rare biography of Bakst written by Andre Levinson, himself a French art journalist. The book is profusely illustrated by Bakst, with over 50 color plates of Bakst's paintings. There is a 5" x 3.75" Bakst color lithograph pasted down to the rear flyleaf that is not indigenous to the book. This is a bonus to an already extremely rare book, which is in very good condition. The book comes housed in a sturdy tan cloth slipcase, with mild wear and minimal staining. We can only find one auction record for this rare volume in the last twenty years.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
