Description

Gide Examines French Colonialism in Africa

André Gide. Voyage au Congo suivi du Retour du Tchad. Paris: Librairie Gallimard, [1929].

First edition, limited to 1,599 copies of which this is number 540. Quarto. 304 pages. Photographs by Marc Allégret. Text in French.

Custom red half morocco with marbled boards and matching endpapers. Spine has titles and decorations stamped in gilt with five raised bands. Lightly rubbed with numerous small scuffs on leather. Minor fading to backstrip. Bookplate. Pages are modestly edge toned with occasional light foxing. A very good copy.

Gide boldly questions and criticizes the French colonial system and the abuses of native Africans committed by French officers. Being a well known author, he was able to challenge the assumptions of many French as to whether the French presence in Africa was truly successful. A beautiful edition illustrated with the stunning photographs of Marc Allégret.
