A Beautiful Set of the First Collected Edition of the The Works of Ambrose Bierce

Ambrose Bierce. The Collected Works of Ambrose Bierce. New York: The Neale Publishing Company, 1909-1912.

First edition of Bierce's collected works, and the de luxe "Autograph Edition" limited to 250 numbered sets, of which this is number 15, signed by Bierce. Twelve octavo volumes. Frontispiece portrait in volume I, with letterpress description printed in red on tissue guard, and engraved frontispieces, some printed or highlighted in color, in volumes II-XI.

Half crushed blue morocco over gold-highlighted marbled boards, spines lettered and stamped in gilt in compartments, five raised bands ruled in gilt, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt. Volume XII in a subtly different leather with slightly different marbled paper, slightly different rules and stamp on spine. The slightest shelf wear to board extremities, most notably to a few headcaps and corners, but overall a beautiful set.

The ultimate volume of this set seems to have been bound apart from the other volumes, perhaps by a different binder; however, the differences between this binding and the others are subtle, and noticeable only upon very close inspection.

A lovely copy of the signed first edition of the collected works of one of America's most famous satirists.

    BAL 1129. Starrett 24.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
