DescriptionAlexander Watkins Terrell. From Texas to Mexico and the Court of Maximilian in 1865. Dallas: The Book Club of Texas, 1933. First edition, limited to two hundred hand-numbered copies. 8vo. xviii, 94 pages. Original publisher's tan cloth over boards, with a yellow cloth spine on which titles are stamped in gilt. Front and rear board each have a small area of damp staining not detracting from the otherwise near fine condition of this slim volume.
Terrell served with distinction during the Civil War but upon conclusion of the hostilities resolved not to live under "Yankee oppression" and fled to Mexico where he served briefly as a battalion commander under Emperor Maximilian. He quickly became disillusioned with Mexico and returned to the United States where he led a distinguished career in law and government.
