Albert Einstein. "Ist die Trägheit eines Körpers von seinem
Energieinhalt abhängig?" In Annalen der Physik, Vierte
Folge, Band 18 (1905), pages 639-641. Leipzig: Verlag von Johann
Ambrosius Barth, 1905.
First printing, included as a monograph in Annalen Der Physik, Band 18, 1905, pages 639 through 641. German text. Octavo (8.5 x 5.5 inches). Whole volume offered. viii, 1084 pages. Eight tables within text.
Contemporary half black cloth over marbled boards. Spine lettered in gilt. Modest shelfwear. Three old paper library labels mounted on the spine, small ink library stamp on the half-title. Internally fine.
This volume contains the fourth of Einstein's papers published in Annalen Der Physik in 1905 and known collectively as the Annus Mirabilis papers. This paper, "Does the Inertia of a Body Depend upon Its Energy Content?" lmost seems a footnote to Einstein's previous papers published earlier in the year, but it formed the basis of what would become Einstein's famous E=mc2 theory. It was not published in English until 1920. Arguably one of the most important scientific papers ever published. Rare.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.View More Testimonials
