Agatha Christie's First Book

Agatha Christie. The Mysterious Affair at Styles, A Detective Story. New York: John Lane Company, 1920.

First edition. Small octavo. 296 pages.

Original cream cloth boards with green titles and decorations to spine and front board. Boards lightly smudged. Very minimal wear to edges, with a couple of tiny dots of discoloration to top edge of pages. Bookplate to front pastedown of Adrian Homer Goldstone, noted bibliophile and author of bibliographies of John Steinbeck and Arthur Machen. Fine condition, tight and square, housed in a custom cloth-covered clamshell box.

This, Agatha Christie's debut novel, was first published in book form in the United States in October, 1920; it was not published in England until February of the following year, a surprising occurrence, indeed, for a work by one of the most British of authors. In addition to being Christie's first book, The Mysterious Affair at Styles is also noteworthy in that it introduced to the world one of her most famous characters, the Belgian detective, Hercule Poirot.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
