Contemporary Newspaper Printing of Hamilton's Federalist Paper, "Concerning the Militia"

[The Federalist Papers]. [Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay]. The New-York Packet. January 11, 1788. New York: Samuel and John Loudon, 1788.

Four pages. Single bifoliate sheet of newsprint measuring approximately 18 x 22.5 inches, folded into two 18 x 11.25-inch leaves. Minor wear, with a few closed tears to the edges. One vertical and one horizontal fold. A few horizontal creases. Light occasional spotting. Inner vertical fold is reinforced with light brown tape, running the length of the fold. Short 2.25-inch horizontal tape repair to page 3-4. All in all, an about fine example.

This handsome artifact is most notable for printing "The Federalist, No. 35, To the People of the State of New-York" under the heading "MISCELLANY" at the top of page 2. Although numbered 35 in this newspaper, this particular entry is actually Federalist No. 29, attributed to Alexander Hamilton, in which he argues that a smaller, more uniform, federally-regulated militia would function best for the new nation. The letter runs two columns and six lines of a third column, counting the signature "Publius" at its conclusion. The printing is a bit light in the middle of the second column, but can still be read easily. Additionally, printed at the lower left side of the front page is an advertisement and solicitation of orders for McLean's 1788 first edition of The Federalist, which "will be printed on a fine paper and good Type." A fascinating and Federalist-heavy New York newspaper.
