First Editon of Pufendorf

[Samuel von Pufendorf]. Samuelis Pufendorfii. De Jure Naturae et Gentium Libre Octo. Lund: Imprimebat Vitus Haberegger Sumtibus A. Junghans, 1672.

First edition. Octavo. [20], 1227, [9] pages. Title page printed in black and red.

Contemporary full mottled calf, single ruled and with rosette decorations stamped in blind. Leather is dry and lightly rubbed with darkening to spine and board edges. A few spots of soiling along page edges. Offsetting to endpapers. Insect damage affecting lower front pastedown and free endpaper, and fore-edge of rear pastedown and free endpaper. Pages are evenly toned. Contemporary underlining throughout with occasional marginalia. A very good copy.

Important work by one of the great jurists of the seventeenth century. In this work Pufendorf, who came from Saxony and had left his war-torn land for Sweden, discusses the idea that the state is a union of individuals who give their individual consent, and that international law is truly international. The author believed peace, though difficult to maintain, was the natural state of mankind.
