Description

[John Milton Niles]. A View of South-America and Mexico Comprising Their History, the Political Condition, Geography, Agriculture, Commerce, &c.
of the Republics of Mexico, Guatemala, Columbia, Peru, the United Provinces of South-America and Chile, With a Complete History of the Revolution, in Each of These Independent States by a Citizen of the United States. New York: H. Huntington, 1825. First edition. Two volumes in one. 12mo. 223; 263 pages. Frontispiece portrait of Simon Bolivar.

Full contemporary leather with titles and decoration stamped in gilt on the spine. Boards scuffed and worn at the extremities, with chipping at the spine ends. Joints worn. Former owner's book plate on the front pastedown; old ownership signature on the title page. Contents slightly toned with scattered foxing throughout, otherwise internally sound. Very good.

This work provided one of the first major descriptions of South American revolutions to appear in the United States. Niles was a newspaper editor, US Senator for Connecticut, postmaster general under Van Buren, and the founder of the Hartford Weekly Times, a liberal newspaper devoted to political reform in Connecticut. He may be best remembered as the Senator who angered the Democratic Party by his refusing to vote immediately for the recognition of Texas and his half-hearted support for the Mexican War.
