    Description

[John Adams]. Journal of the Senate of the United States, Being the First Session of the Fifth Congress, Begun and Held at the City of Philadelphia, May 15, 1797. Philadelphia: John Fenno, 1797. First edition. 115, xvii, x pages, including Appendix. Pages sewn together, untrimmed and uncut. Record of the Fifth Congress, including inaugural address and speeches by President John Adams, as well as the proceedings and evidence against Senator William Blount of Tennessee. It had been discovered that, after falling into debt, Blount had conspired with Great Britain to seize lands in Louisiana (at the time controlled by the Spanish). When his plans were uncovered, he was expelled from the Senate and almost underwent an impeachment trial. It was ultimately decided that impeachment did not apply to senators, but the scandal ruined Blount's reputations and sparked tensions between Federalists and Anti-Federalists who began accusing each other of involvement in the plot.

Condition: Toned throughout, with chipping and small tears at the page edges and corners. Minor foxing throughout. Binding is fairly sound. Overall good.
