Description

[James Cox, editor]. Historical and Biographical Record of the Cattle Industry and the Cattlemen of Texas and Adjacent Territory.
Saint Louis: Woodward & Tiernan Printing Co., 1895. First edition. Folio. 743pp. Color frontispiece and sixteen photographic plates with tissue guards and numerous additional illustrations in text.

Original leather binding stamped in blind and in gilt on the boards. Floral endpapers. Marbled edges. Leather worn from backstrip, ergo joints visible but tenderly attached. Boards edge-worn scuffed, but gilt remains bright. Contents bright. Frontis has ghosted onto the title page. Taken in whole, a very good example worthy of professional restoration.

From Jenkins, Basic Texas Books: "The Cox volume was sent primarily to biographees. . . In addition, the spine of the book was unequal to the task of holding together 743 folio pages and many copies literally fell apart. Furthermore, the publisher's remaining stock was destroyed, either by accidental fire or by simply being dumped on the trash heap. . . Thus are rarities created in the world of books. ". This massive work contains historical data on early Texas history, barbed wire, Cowboys, mavericks, cattle drives, etc. and provides useful biographies of early Texas cattlemen. A rare work in this form.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
