Description[H. R. Howard]. The Life and Adventures of John A. Murrell, the Great Western Land Pirate, With 22 Elegant and Spirited Engravings. New York: H. Long & Brother, 1847. First edition. 8vo.. 126pp. Twenty-two engravings in text. Printed wraps. Roughly bound in a folder. Back wrap missing. Paper toned and brittle. Edges chipped with a small area of loss on the front wrap at the corner and on several preliminary pages. A former owner, perhaps a child, has neatly numbered each illustration with a colored pencil. An incredibly rare book in any condition; all things considered in good condition.
An incredible scarce account of the legendary bandit John Murrell. Murrell operated along the Mississippi River in the mid-19th century and his celebrated exploits captured the public fancy, even finding his way into Mark Twain's Life on the Mississippi. He was ultimately caught and imprisoned. He died of tuberculosis nine months after he was released from prison.
