Who lived eight and twenty years all alone in an uninhabited Island on the Coast of America near the Mouth of the Great River of Oroonoque, having been cast on Shore by Shipwreck, wherein all the Men perished but himself, with an account how he was at last as strangely delivered by Pyrates. [with, in Volume II:] The Farther Adventures of Robinson Crusoe; Being the Second and Last Part of his Life, and of the Strange Surprizing Account of his Travels Round three parts of the Globe. London: John Stockdale, 1790.
Stockdale edition. Two octavo volumes. xii, 389; v, 456 pages, plus eight pages of ads. Thirteen plates, plus two frontispieces and two vignettes. Including a biographical essay, "The Life of Daniel de Foe," by George Chalmers, as well as Chalmers' Defoe bibliography.
Contemporary half polished calf with marbled boards. Gilt stamped and decorated spines. Bookplates. Joints have split and boards are becoming detached. Rubbed and darkened. General toning with offsetting from plates. A few scattered spots of foxing and soiling. A good set.
From Lovett, "Stockdale's edition was an important contribution to the life of Defoe's book. The handsome set restored the Crusoe text which, by 1790, had been much abused. George Chalmers' Life of Defoe was the first significant biography of Defoe. Thomas Stothard, R. A., was a known artist, and his extensive and beautiful illustrations made Stockdale's the first edition so finely decorated."
Lovett, p. 30.
