[Anonymous]. Players of the Day. A Series of Portraits in Colour of Theatrical Celebrities of the Present Time. London: George Newnes Limited, [1902].

First edition. Folio. Unpaginated. With 48 color portraits, each tipped-on to a leaf with a preceding biographical page.

Original pictorial cloth over beveled boards with titles stamped in gilt on the front board and spine.  Moderate soiling and shelf wear to the boards, especially the spine ends. Front and rear hinges cracked, Scattered foxing throughout not affecting the portraits. Very good.

Many notable actors and actresses are featured, but perhaps the best known among is William Gillette, who portrayed Sherlock Holmes on the stage. The biography accompanying his portrait reads in part: "To the great theatre-going public Mr. William Gillette will for a long time stand as the incarnation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's most famous creation - the great amateur detective, Sherlock Holmes, a character completely realized by the actor in all its well-known physical and mental attributes." Gillette's portrait features him as Holmes, seated in his dressing gown smoking a pipe.
