    First and only Aldine edition of Pomponius Mela, with other works. Small octavo (6.25 x 3.875 inches). 236 leaves. Complete with blank leaves q8 and G3. Italic letter. Capital spaces with guide letters. Woodcut printer's device (Aldine anchor and dolphin) on title and on verso of last leaf.

    Nineteenth-century antique-style sheep with covers decoratively paneled in blind. Neatly rebacked, with smooth spine ruled in blind and dated in gilt at foot and with red morocco gilt lettering label. Edges stained green. Tiny hole in blank margin of title, paper flaw in lower blank margin of d3 (fol. 27), small paper repair to blank leaf q8 (fol. [128]), a few tiny holes (paper flaw) in lower blank corner of y4 (fol. 172), not affecting text. Amorial bookplate (inscribed: Holland House) on front pastedown. Date of publication in ink in an early hand on title. A few early ink marginalia. An excellent copy.

    Pomponius Mela's De situ orbis is the earliest surviving classical Latin treatise on geography. A geographical compendium containing De situ orbis of Pomponius Mela, the Polyhistor of Juliuis Solinus, the Iterarium of Antoninus Augustinus, and other texts. The collection was reprinted by Giunta in 1519 and by Paganini in 1521.
