[Rockwell Kent, illustrator]. Herman Melville. Moby Dick or The Whale. Illustrated by Rockwell Kent. Chicago: The Lakeside Press, 1930. Limited to 1,000 copies, designed by Rockwell Kent and printed under the supervision of William A. Kittredge at R. R. Donnelley & Sons Company. Three quarto volumes. xxvii, [1], 279, [1, blank]; vi, [2], 284; vii, [1], 282, [6] pages. With 280 woodcut illustrations by Rockwell Kent throughout. Original black cloth over beveled boards, stamped in silver on front covers and spines in a design by Kent; top edge stained black; each volume in the original acetate dust jacket with paper flaps. Cloth spines lightly sunned, some rubbing to bindings. Mild offsetting to text from illustrations, as is often the case with this title. Acetate jackets have some tears and wear, and there is some wrinkling to the paper flaps. Still, a fine copy of this beautiful American press book. Housed in the original aluminum slipcase (some scuffing, and mild wear). Johnson, p. 354.

In 1926, The Lakeside Press began "Four American Books," an ambitious program to publish four titles by American authors that would match or exceed European fine press books in design and elegance. "We will all go jump in the lake if this book is not the greatest illustrated book ever done in America" (from a letter to Rockwell Kent by William A. Kittredge, Director of Design and Typography at Lakeside Press).
