    Description

The Magnificent Bentley Motors Limited Edition of the James Bond Novel, Devil May Care, with the Model of Bond's R-Type Bentley

[Ian Fleming, association]. [ James Bond ]. Sebastian Faulks. Devil May Care. [New York and London]: Doubleday and Bentley Motors, [2008]. First edition, one of only 300 copies, this is copy number 210. Quarto. [x], [406] pages. The text pages with die-cut space for a 1:43 scale model of the modified R-Type Bentley which Bond drove in the later Fleming novels (nicknamed the Locomotive). This model was specifically designed and built solely for this title. Magnificently bound in Bodoniana style cases finished in Burnt Oak leather (from the Pasubia Tannery, who supply hides for Bentley). The leather casing is stitched in the iconic Bentley diamond design as found in modern Bentleys. The stitching was done by the same craftsmen who produce the Vatican's leather-bound books. The flying "B" Bentley radiator cap design is stamped onto the front board and the spine in silver, the spine lettered in silver. The doublures are trimmed in deep red "Hotspur" leather, with fluting done in the style of Bentley's 1950's and 1960's leather interiors. Black lacquer steel engine plate-style plaque indicating the copy number is mounted on the inner front cover. The book was printed by Graphicom in Italy, using Munken Cream 150 gsm paper stock - the highest grade of paper available for a project of this quality. The type font matches that of Bentley's owner's manuals. In the original lucite slipcase, padded shipping box and plain paper shipping covering. Some creasing and minor wear to plain paper shipping covering and box. One tiny, barely visible spot on spine, else book, model and slipcase are bright and fine, almost as new. One of the most handsome, unique and altogether fitting Bond books ever produced. From the James Bond collection of Gary Firuta.

    More Information:

Bond owned and drove various Bentleys - including the famous 1933 4.5 Litre Bentley "Blower," arguable one of the most famous Bentleys ever produced. He drove this car in Casino Royale, and, sadly, wrecked it at the end of an exciting car chase (pursuing the villainous Sir Hugo Drax) in Moonraker. He replaced it at the end of Moonraker with a wrecked 1953 Mark II Continental, and had it repaired, restored, and modified by Mulliner to reflect his rather unique driving needs (nicknaming it the Locomotive): "She went like a bird and a bomb and Bond loved her more than all the women at present in his life rolled, if that were feasible, together." (Fleming, Thunderball).
