    A Handsome Fore-Edge Painting of an Angel and Three Choir Singers

    [Fore-Edge Paintings]. Hymns of the Church Militant. London: James Nisbet and Co., 1862. Octavo. [viii], 640 pages. Contemporary full tan calf, boards double-ruled in gilt, spine tooled in gilt in compartments, brown gilt morocco lettering label, gilt board edges and turn-ins, marbled endleaves. With a fore-edge painting depicting an angel, a woman playing a harpsichord and two boys with hymnals. Spine worn, joints re-hinged, some wear and soiling to binding, hinges reinforced with later marbled paper, contemporary ownership inscription on front blank. A fair copy.

    First edition. With a beautiful fore-edge painting of three sailing ships crossing the Northwest Passage. Octavo. 696 pages. Contemporary full black morocco, boards ruled in blind, front board stamped in gilt with gilt central armorial stamp of Frederick Hamilton-Temple-Blackwood, 1st Marquess of Dufferin and Ava, spine stamped and lettered in gilt in compartments, five raised bands, marbled endleaves. Some wear to binding, else very good.
