Octavo (7 x 5 inches; 178 x 127 mm). xxiv, 732, 149 [Glossarial Index], [1, blank] pages. Frontispiece facsimile of the manuscript portrait of Chaucer from Hoccleve's Regement of Princes. Full red calf, simple borders rolled in gilt, quatrefoil centerpiece featuring the arms and motto of Worcester tooled in gilt, gilt green morocco lettering piece, spine elaborately tooled in gilt in compartments, five raised bands, gilt board edges and turn-ins, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, fore-edge painting featuring views of Canterbury and the Tabard Inn. Printed prize bookplate from the Worcester Royal Grammar School signed by headmaster H.R. Pullinger, and awarded to Worcester alumnus Irwin Stuart Spalding, winner of the 1929 Senior Prize for English. Spine mellowed to brown, else a fine copy. A fine, historically notable copy of Skeat's seminal edition of Chaucer, in a handsome binding with a rustic fore-edge painting featuring two Canterbury-related scenes.
