Publisher's Mock-up With One-of-a-Kind Trial Binding, Original Pencil Drawings and Watercolors Done For the First Time

[Cheloniidae Press]. Mark Twain. The Jumping Frog. The Private Printing of the "Jumping Frog" Story. An Afterword by Samuel Clemens. [Easthampton, Massachusetts]: Cheloniidae Press, 1985.

Publisher's mock-ups in various stages containing: the original mock-up book with original pencil drawings, a complete set of sixteen watercolors signed by Alan James Robinson done for the first time as watercolors, the original working copies for the text with three dummies for the dust jacket of the trade edition by Chronicle Books, a blank full leather book with the first multi-color onlay done on both sides of the cover by Daniel E. Kelm, two trial onlays (one blue and one tan) for the cover design by Daniel E. Kelm, and a set of the pencil studies done as preliminary drawings for the wood engravings. All of these are enclosed in individual oatmeal cloth chemises and laid into a custom clamshell box with a paper spine label hand-lettered in calligraphy. This may be the richest treasure trove of all the mock-ups. The watercolors appear here for the first time. The two trial onlays are a unique and important look at the binder's craft. And the wealth of pencil studies tells much about the development of one of the finest works of the press.
