    Claude-Oronce Fine de Brianville, (d. 1675) a French Jesuit and abbe de Saint-Benoit de Quincay-les-Poitiers, first published this work at Paris in 1659.  The book is interesting because it consists of a pedagogical game presenting information about the various European states and their emblems in the form of playing cards. It constitutes the first work designed as a learning game involving coats-of-arms, history and geography.

    "A flood of educational games now followed... First of all, there is heraldry and... Fine published a 'Jeu de Blason' in Lyons. Menestrier... has given a detailed account of the initial troubles and the tremendous success of Brainville. It appears some princes were extremely indignant at finding themselves shown as knaves or aces although they were of royal blood. The cards were consequently seized by the City Council and Brainville had to change knaves and aces into princes and chevailiers, The changes in the coats-of-arms enable individual editions to be distinguished..."
