Author's Autograph Edition, limited to 500 sets, of which this is number twenty-three, with original one-page holographic manuscript mounted to inserted leaf in the first volume of Alhambra, containing text in the first chapter of Book VIII in The Life and Voyages of Christopher Columbus, found in this set on pages 236-239 of second Columbus volume. Forty octavo volumes. Illustrated with frontispieces and numerous illustrated plates, with descriptive tissue guards, inserted throughout, Sketch Map for Capt. Bonneville's Adventures laid in. Publisher's green levant morocco, boards decoratively stamped in gilt at corners, spines with five raised bands, compartments lettered or stamped in gilt; top edge gilt, others untrimmed; gilt-tooled board edges and turn-ins; marbled endpapers; signed by Putnam's on front turn-in of each volume. Backstrips faintly dulled, spine ends worn with some occasional small chips, boards lightly rubbed with mild wear to edges; a few joints broken, rear board of The Life of George Washington and front board of The Crayon Miscellany both detached, few others only starting. Manuscript leaf corners right-edge corners torn at adhesive. Overall, still a very good set. From the library of Sylvester Stallone.
