The Bombay Edition of Kipling's Works, Signed by Him, and Bound By Bayntun With Original Watercolors

Rudyard Kipling. The Works of Rudyard Kipling. London: Macmillan and Co., Limited, 1913 - 1919. The Bombay Edition, complete in twenty-five royal octavo volumes and signed by Kipling in volume one. Printed at the Florence Press on specially watermarked paper. Sumptuously bound in full straight-grain sienna morocco by Bayntun Binder, Bath. Spines with raised bands, brown and black title labels, and gilt floral devices in compartments. Covers with borders in double gilt rule and decorative borders in gilt and black. Inner dentelles gilt. Top edges gilt, others uncut. Each of the volumes has a colophon page (missing from volume XXIV) giving the limitation at 1,050 copies, thus agreeing with Livingston that the set was issued complete at twenty-five volumes and disproving Stewart's assertion that it was issued as twenty volumes at 1,050 copies with later volumes being limited to 500 copies. In fact, six additional volumes were issued later, with volume twenty-six being limited to 1,000 volumes and volumes XXVII through XXXI being limited to 500 volumes. Volume I in this set is lavishly Extra-illustrated with more than fifty original watercolor vignettes and decorations, each of the vignettes being signed by the artist. Spines lightly sunned, some very minor rubbing. Still, all bindings fine, with the contents fresh as new. An extraordinary set, beautifully bound and decorated. Livingston 454 - 456.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
