John Milton. Poetical Works... London: Johnson, et al., 1801. Large paper copy of the first edition of Todd's Milton. Six volumes. Skillfully rebacked, bookplates. Near fine.

    More Information:

Six large octavo volumes with portrait frontispiece of Milton in volume I, and engraved plate of Queen Christina in volume VI. With biography of Milton by Todd. Contemporary full brown speckled calf, boards decoratively ruled in gilt. Skillfully rebacked to style in later brown morocco, stamped in blind and gilt, burgundy and black gilt morocco lettering labels, gilt board edges and turn-ins, later endleaves. Some rubbing and mild wear to binding (boards with slight flaking), bookplates on both pastedowns, neat ownership signatures on title-pages. Still, a near fine set that shows quite well. From the collection of Alexander J. Jemal, Jr.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
