With an Autograph Quotation from Uncle Tom's Cabin Signed by Harriet Beecher Stowe

Harriet Beecher Stowe. The Writings of Harriet Beecher Stowe. Cambridge: Printed at the Riverside Press, 1896-1897. Large-Paper Edition, one of 250 numbered copies, this being copy number "183".
Sixteen octavo volumes (this set is lacking volume VII, but has the volume of biography, issued a year after the set was published, and not normally called for). This copy signed by Stowe and dated by her ("Jany. 8th 1896") on a special inserted leaf, the date being a few months before her death. Additionally, this copy has an autograph quotation from chapter XII of Uncle Tom's Cabin, signed and dated by Stowe, inserted: "Not one throb of anguish; not one tear/of the oppressed is forgotten by the Man/of Sorrows, the Lord of Glory/For his patient generous bosom/He bears the anguish of a world!/Uncle Tom's Cabin/Chap 12th/Harriet Beecher Stowe/May 18 1894". Both signed leaves are inserted into volume I. Illustrated with engraved frontispieces and title-pages. Bound by the publisher in contemporary three-quarter green levant morocco, gilt, over blue cloth boards, spine tooled and lettered in gilt in compartments, five raised bands, top edge gilt, others uncut. Spines uniformly sunned, half of the headcaps have chipping or damage, some rubbing to bindings. Bookplates. Overall, a very good set with a wonderful inscription by Stowe.
