Five Volumes of "Chagall's Lithographs" in Exquisite Fine Art Bindings by Silvia Rennie
[Silvia Rennie, art binder]. Marc Chagall. The Lithographs of Chagall. Introduction by Marc Chagall. Notes and Catalogue by Fernand Mourlot. New York and Boston: George Braziller, Crown Publishers, and Boston Book and Art Shop, [1960-1984].First American editions of all five volumes. Complete in five folio volumes (approximately 12.25 x 9.25 inches). With numerous color and black-and-white plates, and twenty-five lithographs inserted throughout the volumes. With original lithographic dust jackets preserved in the custom slipcase (jackets slightly trimmed down).
Bound in a unique art binding (listed in the exhibition catalogue by Silvia Rennie and Jan Sobota of their 1988 show at the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art in New York, enclosed with set). Each volume is bound in full French harlequin morocco with the bindings forming one continuous design, extending from the rear board of Volume I to the front board of Volume V. Many multi-colored and metallic leather onlays with tooling representing a panorama of Chagall's life, starting from the cold of Vitebsk, then reaching Paris in the middle of his life, then on to the South of France, ending with the "Death of the Clown" under Autumn leaves on Volume V. With several symbols used by Chagall throughout, including two-headed beasts, an angel with flowers, and others; each volume has a sun or moon waxing or waning on the spines. Top edges decorated with graphite and colors, forming over the entirety of the set a flowered bush after Chagall. His name appears in leather onlay on all five volumes. Headbands are stitched in silk in the French style. All housed in a custom-built cream cloth case, with a closed compartment which houses the original dust jackets. A magnificent example of fine art binding, and a delight to see and experience. Fine.
This set comes with the aforementioned exhibition catalog, a typed letter signed by Rennie to the original buyer (dated "6/10/89"), an early typed description of the set as mentioned in the letter, and a catalog of her work, as exhibited at Kroch & Brentano's in Chicago in 1985.
