Zane Grey. The Last of the Plainsmen. New York: Outing Publishing, 1908. First edition. Inscribed, "With the compliments of / "The Last of the Plainsmen" / C. J. Jones / and the Author / Zane Grey" on the front free endpaper and signed by J. W. Crawford on a leaf mounted to the rear endpaper. Octavo. 314 pages. Publisher's original pictorial cloth. Boards with scattered soiling and sunning to the edges of the rear board and spine, else very good. This remarkable copy was obviously owned by an attendee of the "Camp Fire" Buckskin Night, held December 4, 1909 on the roof of the Hotel Astor in New York. Portions of the evening's program have been mounted to various preliminary and terminal endpapers including a printed copy of the evening's toast authored and signed by Captain Jack Crawford. From a private collection in North Carolina.

    More Information:

A contemporary New York Tribune article concerning the event wrote in part: "Of noise there was a plenty. Warwhoops [sic] and the shrill of the cowman of on a rampage with his four months' pay in his belt floated off into the "Great White Way," while Mr. Hornaday pleaded in vain for quiet. Finally, when everyone was exhausted...Mr. Hornaday told of the passing of the oldtime [sic] West: "There isn't any more West...the Indians are good and you can't possibly stir up a fight."
