    Description

The Exceedingly Rare True First American Edition of Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea

Jules Verne. Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. Boston: James R. Osgood, 1873. The true first American edition. One of only a small number of copies extant (perhaps fifty copies or less). Octavo. viii, 303 (with "The End" on page 303). Illustrations collate complete, with 109 full-page plates inserted throughout, including two maps. Publisher's green cloth with front cover ruled in black and gilt. Paneled in gilt and lettered in black with gilt borders, with centered gilt device of jellyfish. Spine decoratively stamped in gilt and black, with the misprint "Sea" instead of "Seas." Expertly rebacked with the original spine laid down. Covers somewhat rubbed. Spine somewhat rubbed and slightly darkened. Corners of top board with minute repair. Original coated chocolate endpapers present, rear joint skillfully repaired, front joint just barely starting. Very light and only occasional foxing in text. A few spots of minor soiling to the margins, most notably on the leaves surrounding page 42. Still, a very good copy of this rarity, most copies of which burned in the Great Boston Fire of 1872.
