    The Rarest James Bond Novel

Ian Fleming. The Man with the Golden Gun. London: Jonathan Cape, [1965]. First edition. The very scarce first issue binding, with the gilt-stamped "golden gun" on the front board. Octavo. 221, [3, blank] pages. Publisher's black paper binding, front board stamped in gilt, spine lettered in gilt, green and white patterned endleaves, dust jacket. Jacket spine a bit toned, some rubbing and very minor wear and soiling to jacket edges, very minor rubbing to binding, only a few small spots of oxidation and some minor rubbing on the "golden gun". The binding of this book, and in particular the "golden gun" are in much better condition than usually seen; book is fine, jacket is very good. Housed in custom-built full morocco slipcase. This first issue binding is by far the rarest of all the James Bond novels (it has been estimated that only fifty to one hundred or so copies are extant - far less than the 290 copies of the signed limited edition of On Her Majesty's Secret Service). From a private collection in North Carolina.

    More Information:

When Cape printed The Man with the Golden Gun, they discovered that the "golden gun" on the front cover was unusually prone to oxidation, and so pulped almost the entire output (the final print-run that eventually went to bookshops and customers in England was printed with blank front boards). Only a few copies had survived this destruction, and they had mainly found their way overseas (to Australia, South Africa, Kenya, and New Zealand). This title is one of the only examples of modern firsts issued in dust jacket in which the value of the book is almost entirely in the binding, and almost none is in the dust jacket. Biondi/Pickard, p. 50.
