First Edition of Moonraker in the Original
First Issue Dust Jacket, with a Typed Letter
Signed by Ian Fleming to His Publisher
    About an Alternate Title

Ian Fleming [ James Bond ]. Moonraker. London: Jonathan Cape, [1955]. First edition, first state, in the first issue dust jacket with prices intact. With "shoo" for "shoot" on page 10. Octavo. [256] pages. Publisher's full black cloth, front board and spine lettered in silver, dust jacket. Jacket spine sunned (though less so than is usually seen), jacket toned with some edgewear and rubbing, spine creased, a few short tears, some soiling and wear to rear panel, cloth spine slightly rubbed, a small stain to front board at top, an ink price ("10" in a circle) on the front free endpaper. Text slightly toned, with some occasional soiling or foxing. Skewed. Still, a very good copy, which shows somewhat better than usual. [Together with:] Ian Fleming (1908-1964). Typed Letter Signed. London: 24th July 1954. On Kemsley House stationery. Approximately 7.5 x 5 inches. Addressed to G. Wren Howard, Esq., the co-founder of Jonathan Cape, Fleming's publisher. "Dear Wren Howard [written in Fleming's hand]/Glad to hear you agree with THE INFERNAL MACHINE[.] This business of titles is surely enough to drive one to the edge. Spent an INFERNAL night at the gaming rooms in Bedford Square. Tell you all about it soon. Coin Gone. Yours ever/Ian Fleming [last two lines in Fleming's hand]. One horizontal crease, some soiling and light edgewear. Very good.
The letter is concerned with the problem of the title of this book, which had more potential titles than any other title before it (there had been a book entitled The Moonraker by Tennyson Jesse, as pointed out by Fleming's friend Noël Coward). Fleming came up with alternate titles, and asked other editors at Cape for more ideas. Several possibilities were put forward, including The Infernal Machine. Fleming eventually settled on the simple yet effective Moonraker. From the James Bond collection of Gary Firuta.
