The Tamerlane Edition of Poe with the Rare Suite of Plates

Edgar Allan Poe. The Complete Works of Edgar Allan Poe. Edited and Chronologically Arranged on the Basis of the Standard Text, with Certain Additional Material and with a Critical Introduction by Charles F. Richardson. New York and London: G. P. Putnam's Sons / The Knickerbocker Press, [1902].

Number 127 of 300 sets of the "Tamerlane Edition," printed on Ruisdael handmade paper. Ten octavo volumes plus the folio volume of plates titled, "Illustrations (Printed on Japanese Vellum Paper) for the Works of Edgar Allan Poe from Original Paintings by Frederick Simpson Coburn." Illustrated throughout with photogravure plates (with printed tissue guards) by Frederick Simpson Coburn. Frontispieces in color gravure. Illustrated title pages, chapter headings and tailpieces. Suite of Coburn illustrations contains seventy-one (of seventy-two) large plates with small printed tissue labels (three of which are not present).

Full deep chocolate levant morocco with double-ruled gilt borders and decorative cornerpieces on the boards, gilt titles and decorations on the spines inside four raised bands stippled in gilt, and gilt turn-ins. Top edges gilt, others untrimmed. Marbled endpapers. Illustrated plates housed in the publisher's dark brown cloth portfolio chemise with a paper title label on the front cover. Minor shelf wear to bindings. Corners lightly rubbed. Spines ever-so-slightly faded, common with this title. A couple of instances of offsetting from inserted articles, but the great majority of the text is very clean. Light rubbing and one small scratch to the cover label of the plate portfolio. A near fine set with the large plate volume usually not found with this title.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
