    Clements Ripley. Gold Is Where You Find It. New York: Appleton-Century, 1936. First edition. Inscribed by the author and the director (Michael Curtiz) and cast (including Olivia De Havilland and Claude Rains) of the 1938 film to the cinematographer.

    Inscribed by the author on the title-page to the cinematographer, Sol Polito: "To Sol Polito Nov 23 '51./Couldn't have had a/better camera man for/the picture/Clements Ripley". Inscribed on the front pastedown by director Michael Curtiz: "Many Thanks to/the Best Man,/Who Knows his stuff/Michael Curtiz". Signed by fourteen cast members of the film on the front free endpaper (all of whom wrote their character's name by theirs), including George Brent, Olivia De Havilland, Claude Rains, and Sidney Toler. Three more cast members have signed in a similar fashion on the verso of the front free endpaper. Octavo. [iv], 331, [1, blank] pages. Publisher's full orange cloth, front cover and spine lettered in black. Three small tears to rear board, some rubbing and very minor thumbsoiling to binding. Very good.

    The owner of this book, cinematographer Sol Polito (1892-1960) had a long and distinguished career, working on 167 films, and was nominated for three Academy Awards. Some of the other films he photographed were Adventures of Robin Hood (1938), Angels with Dirty Faces (1938), Sergeant York (1941), and  Sorry Wrong Number (1948).
