Barnett Freedman's Anna Karenina Lithographs Set. (No Publication Information, No Date), 56 illustrations, black half cloth binding with tan cloth on the boards, 8vo (6" x 9"), no dust jacket. Comes in custom slipcase with paper boards and red cloth around the edges. Lithograph proof set of Freedman's illustrations for the 1951 New York Limited Editions Club publication of Tolstoy's Anna Karenina. One of only six bound proof sets of the illustrations, originally composed by Freedman in watercolor and wash over pen & ink and pencil. Freedman's professional career is most remembered through his book illustration and design of book jackets for publishers ranging from Faber & Faber to the Folio Society. Freedman is credited with reviving the use of watercolor art in book illustration in the 1930s and 1940s. When the British war department needed artists for the effort in World War II, one of their first commissions went to Freedman. He worked for the Admiralty from 1940 to 1946. In 1956, he was recognized as an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Arts, and later a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. This copy is near fine, with small pencil notes on the front free endpaper.
