A Remarkably Beautiful, Unopened Copy of Rockwell Kent's Moby Dick, in the Original Aluminum Slipcase

[Rockwell Kent, illustrator]. Herman Melville. Moby Dick or The Whale. Illustrated by Rockwell Kent. Chicago: The Lakeside Press, 1930.

Limited to 1,000 copies, designed by Rockwell Kent and printed under the supervision of William A. Kittredge at R.R. Donnelley & Sons Company. Three quarto volumes (11 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches; 295 x 215 mm.). xxvii, [1], 279, [1, blank]; vi, [2], 284; vii, [1], 282, [6] pp. With 280 woodcut illustrations by Rockwell Kent. An unopened copy.

Original beveled black cloth, front board and spine stamped in silver in a design by Kent, top edges stained black. Occasional, very subtle offsetting from the illustrations, as is usual. Very light rubbing to front board of volume III. Spines lightly sunned, with light rubbing or soiling to heads and tails. A small stain to the middle of the volume I spine. Overall, an excellent copy and the best we have encountered, especially clean and bright, with all volumes in the original glassine jackets (now perishing) and housed in the original aluminum slipcase (top left edge of case opening dented slightly).

A remarkably beautiful copy of one of the most famous American illustrated books of the twentieth century. Rarely found in such fine condition, copies in the original aluminum slipcase as with the present lot are exceedingly scarce, and unopened copies with the original glassine jackets present are virtually non-existent. Simply extraordinary.

    Johnson, p. 354.
