Feodor M. Dostoyevsky. Crime and Punishment.A Russian Realistic Novel. New York: Thomas Y. Crowell & Co., [1886]. First American edition of this landmark novel, first issue of ads in rear (issued simultaneously with the English edition, no priority). Octavo. [2, blank], 456, [1, ads], [1, blank] pages. With portrait frontispiece inserted. Publisher's full brown cloth, front board stamped in gilt and red, spine stamped in gilt. Spine somewhat toned and edgeworn. Boards soiled and somewhat edgeworn, some wear to joints. Cloth lightly bubbling. A few faint pencil notes on front free endpaper. A few gutters overopened. Skewed. Still, a very good example of this novel. This book is commonly considered to be one of the greatest works of literature. This novel explores the inner torment of an impoverished student turned murderer, finding that the justifications that he invented to validate the crime vanish in the face of the horror he's committed.
