With a Charming Inscription by F. Scott Fitzgerald to Actor Edward Everett Horton

    F. Scott Fitzgerald. The Beautiful and Damned. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1922.

First edition, third printing. Presentation copy, inscribed by Fitzgerald on the front free-endpaper: "This book oddly / enough is responsible / from its title for / the phrase 'beautiful / and dumb.' I / doubt if it has any / other distinction. / For Edward Everett Horton / from F. Scott Fitzgerald / Encino 1939." Octavo. [viii], 449, [1, blank], [2, Fitzgerald's works] pages.

Publisher's full green cloth, front cover lettered in blind, spine lettered in gilt. With a later printing dust jacket from the A. L. Burt edition. Some mild wear to jacket, cloth boards with soil marks near fore-edge, spine a bit dull. Housed in custom-made folding chemise and quarter leather slipcase. A good copy with an utterly charming inscription by Fitzgerald to the beloved character actor, Edward Everett Horton, known for his roles in Lost Horizon, Alice in Wonderland, Top Hat, The Gay Divorcee, and as a voice for The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show.

    Bruccoli, Fitzgerald, A 8. I. c.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
