First edition, first printing (no batter to margins at lines 6-9 on page 38, lines 21-24 on page 248, and the page number on page 90). Octavo. [viii], 267, [1, blank] pages. Publisher's full green cloth, front board lettered in blind, spine lettered in gilt. In the original first printing dust jacket (the woman on the front cover has no batter to her lips). Jacket is price-clipped, several tears to joints, several old tape repairs to jacket verso, Jacket spine toned and chipped (no loss of text), some toning, edgewear, mild soiling to jacket panels, cloth spine worn at edges (gilt still bright), some soiling to boards, rear board dampstained near fore-edge, lower front corner bumped, gutter facing half-title starting, last few leaves with marginal dampstaining. Tiny tear to fore-edge of front free endpaper. Edges of text block foxed or soiled (generally not affecting text, except as mentioned, near the end). Still, a good copy.
