Eugène Delacroix. Autograph Manuscript. Ten pages in French, with text on seven leaves, entitled "Notes sur le Poussin" on the spine of binding, n.p.; n.d. Nicolas Poussin (1594-1665) was a leading French painter of the Baroque style (although he worked mainly in Rome). His bold canvasses told stories from religious, mythological, or allegorical sources. Delacroix was a great admirer of Poussin, writing in 1853, that "The life of Poussin is reflected in his works; it is in perfect harmony with the beauty and nobility of his inventions... Poussin was one of the greatest innovators found in the history of painting. He arrived in the middle of the school of mannerism, where the craft was preferred to the intellectual role of art. He broke with all that falseness." (Rosenberg and Temperini, 1994).
Ferdinand Victor Eugène Delacroix (1798-1863) was a French Romantic artist regarded from the outset of his career as the leader of the French Romantic School.
Condition: Some leaves toned, some edge wear, several creases to leaves. Generally very good. Each leaf is mounted on a stub at the left margin in a specially-built book. Book is twentieth-century half green morocco over marbled boards, spine lettered in gilt. Some mild rubbing, soiling to book, else fine.
