Esteban Pichardo. Geografia de la Isla de Cuba. Publicase bajo los auspicios de la Real Junta de Fomento. Habana: Establecimiento tipográfico de D. M. Soler, 1854.

First edition. Four volumes in one. Octavo. xlix, 155; 272; 356; 240 pages.

Contemporary marbled sheep with gilt spine lettering and decoration. Marbled endpapers. Spine with some darkening but, overall, a lovely copy of this exceedingly rare and early publication about Cuba.

    More Information:

In 1854 the first three volumes of this encyclopedic study were published; the fourth part was published one year later. Although never officially completed, this work brings together all the geographical knowledge about Cuba up until that time. It includes astronomy, hydrography, physical features, topographic statistics, and political divisions. It also includes a Dictionary of Cuban Botany. Highly erudite, the author was an eminent scientist whose work covered the majority of the nineteenth-century in Cuba. His dictionary of Cuban terms has not yet been superseded.
