Erskine Caldwell Signed First Edition of God's Little Acre. (New York: The Viking Press, 1933), first edition, 303 pages, black cloth with orange and green lettering on spine and cover, 12mo (5.5" x 7.5"), dust jacket (in protective mylar). Deckled fore-edge. Signed "for Frank...from Erskine Caldwell" on half-title page. After the publication of Tobacco Road just a year earlier, God's Little Acre was released to great acclaim and no small measure of controversy in 1933. It was censored and banned in Georgia and Boston, respectively, but found its worst critics in New York, where the New York Literary Society convinced authorities to arrest Caldwell while he was there on a book-signing tour. After a lengthy trial, Caldwell was exonerated; he counter-sued the State of New York for false arrest and malicious prosecution. The novel centers on the amoral Walden family and their patriarch Ty Ty Walden, who spends the majority of his time digging holes in his land in a quixotic search for gold while his family disintegrates around him. A true tragi-comedy, described by the Saturday Review of Literature as, "a beautifully integrated story of the barren southern farm and the shut southern mill, and one of the finest studies of the southern poor white which has ever come into our literature." This copy is about very good, with very slight edge wear and very slight separation of the half-title page. There is a Frank and Laura bookplate on the front free endpaper, probably belonging to the subject of the Caldwell inscription. The dust jacket is fair, with total separation at the front hinge, some chipping at the head and tail of the spine and general edge wear and yellowing, but it has retained vibrant orange and green accenting overall. This is a beautiful first edition of a novel that has sold over fourteen million copies since 1933.
