With a Charming Original Ink Drawing by Ernest Thompson Seton

Ernest Thompson Seton. Lives of Game Animals. An Account of those Land Animals in America, north of the Mexican Border, which are considered "game," either because they have held the attention of Sportsmen, or received the Protection of the Law. New York: Doubleday, Page, 1925-1928.

First edition, one of 177 numbered copies signed by the author, this being copy number "153". Signed on the frontispiece of volume one. In addition, this copy has an original drawing initialed by Seton entitled "The Desperado" mounted to the front pastedown of volume one (approximate size of drawing: 7.5 x 6.75 inches). The drawing depicts an angry animal with a bushy tail (a skunk?) wearing a ranger's hat and carrying a revolver. The drawing is inscribed in the upper left corner: "To Dr. J. C. Phillips / with best wishes of / Ernest Thompson Seton [underlined and with his animal paw symbol]." The drawing is initialed "E. T. S." below the image.

Four quarto volumes. With fifty maps and 1,500 illustrations by the author. Publisher's brown cloth backstrips over tan cloth boards, covers double-ruled in gilt, with a gilt-stamped central image of an animal, spines lettered in gilt, top edge gilt. Some rubbing and light wear (some minor insect damage to spines), some soiling to boards, text blocks just slightly sagging in bindings (to be expected for such heavy text blocks). Still, a near fine copy of this rare item, with a charming drawing.
