Description

Ernest Hemingway. Typed Lease Contract. Cortina [Italy]: 14 Octobre 1948. Typed by Hemingway's landlord (Aprile [spelled "Aprilie" at the beginning of the contract] Palma), but with two penciled notations ("House/Contract" and "$116/a mo.") in Hemingway's hand. Two quarto leaves, rectos only, approximately 11 x 8.5 inches on white typing paper. Leaves are toned to tan, some edgewear and a few tiny chips, one vertical and two horizontal creases, ink stain, a few small ink markings in an unknown hand on the first leaf. With several typed corrections and many misspellings. Very good.

This contract is for the rental between Aprile Palma and "Mr. Hemingway Ernest" for "the Villa Aprile in via Coianna [sic] for the season, in the state how [sic] seen and found satisfactory, completely furnished [long correction] as separat [sic] inventory list." The contract is "fixed and agreed upon for the period from 1 december [sic] to the end of march [sic]." It is a pretty explicit contract, with provisions for only four people ("2-persons and for the service -2- persons"), the care of the house and furniture ("The lodger must use the house the furnoiture [sic] and the equippment [sic, with typed corrections] with the care of a good house father") and, curiously, "It is forbidden to use the bathroom as laundry room."

It was during this trip that Hemingway met the nineteen-year-old Venetian aristocrat Adriana Ivancich, who became his muse (they had a romantic relationship, but one that was apparently never consummated - Hemingway was married at the time and was thirty years her senior). He based the character of Renata in Across the River and into the Trees on her, and she claimed that she later inspired him to write The Old Man and the Sea. This contract is an interesting artifact in that important chapter in Hemingway's life.
