Ernest Hemingway. The Fifth Column and the First Forty-Nine Stories. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1938. First edition, later printing, presentation copy, inscribed by Hemingway on the front free endpaper to his good friends: "To Priscilla and Ned / wishing them good luck / always / Ernest Hemingway". Octavo. x, 597, [1, blank] pages. Publisher's full red cloth, front board stamped in black, spine stamped in black and gilt, dust jacket. Jacket spine toned, jacket front panel detached (yet present) from the spine, jacket chipped, worn with several creased tears, jacket soiled. Cloth spine toned, cloth spine and joints soiled, some light edgewear to binding, gutter facing title-page cracked, some offsetting to endleaves, a few words in Hemingway's inscription are smudged. Overall, a good copy. Hanneman A16.

The recipients of this book were Ned Calmer (1907-1986) and his wife, Priscilla. Ned was an American reporter for the Paris Herald (the European edition of the New York Herald and the Chicago Tribune), and he later was a radio and television reporter for CBS (he was hired by Edward R. Murrow, and was one of the legendary "Murrow's Boys"). Hemingway took a liking to the Calmers, who advised Ned on his (then) ambitions to be a fiction writer; Hemingway even financed their trip back to America. The Calmers and Hemingway remained friends, and kept in touch over the years.
