Presentation copy, signed and inscribed by the author to his goddaughter, "To Alden Calmer Read / with all good wishes / from her friend / Ernest Hemingway." Octavo. 232 pages. Publisher's grey cloth stamped in gilt, spine stamped in gilt and black; original illustrated dust jacket. Minor edgewear, head and foot of spine sunned, pushed and somewhat worn. Cream endpapers; lightly toned along hinges. Internally generally clean and tight, all edges trimmed; residue (food?) to pages 2-3, mostly in margin but somewhat affecting text and with related staining and wrinkling, text block edges toned with minor wear, small ink mark to the tail edge of the text block. Dust jacket unclipped ($3.00); heavy edgewear and moderate chipping, losses to the head of spine and corners, several open tears with losses to the top edge of the front panel, spine sunned, somewhat rubbed and soiled. Housed in custom clamshell case; half red morocco over red cloth stamped in gilt, spine stamped in gilt with five raised bands. Very good book with good dust jacket.
